Biology 1 Summer assignment
This assignment is for students starting 9th grade
STEP 1: Look at the list of Biology topics below and decide which one you think is most interesting
STEP 2: Choose the most interesting topic and write down 3 facts you know about it already
STEP 3: Research more information about the topic
A. Find at least one video that explains about the topic you chose. Go to youtube and type in your chosen topic. Watch a
few of the videos that come up and choose the video you think explains the topic in the best way
B. Take notes from the video and write a summary
C. Go to the website links for the topic (see below each topic) and read the article
D. Summarize the articles
E. Write down 4 new facts you have learned about the topic
F. Make a small poster
Use a letter-sized white piece of paper (copy paper is fine)
The poster should include the following

- The 4 new facts you learned about the topic
- A drawing that has to do with the topic (for example, if you chose "Genetics" you could draw a molecule of DNA

STEP 2: Create a small poster of a food web
The videos below show examples of ecosystems and mention the connections of the organisms in this ecosystem
A. Watch the videos and chose one ecosystem to use for your project
USE a letter-size page of white paper (normal copy paper is fine)
B. The title of your food web is the name of the ecosystem (see title above video you chose)
C. Your food web should contain at least 7 different organisms
D. Draw the organisms in your food web and label them with their names
E. Connect the organisms correctly, showing their relationship with each other ---> the arrows in a food web always point
towards the organism that is eating the other organism
F. Make sure your poster is neat and colorful
STEP 3: Create a small poster of a food web in an ecosystem of your choice
A. Choose an ecosystem you can observe. This can be a park in your neighborhood, a pond or a little stream close to your
house. It can also be the beach if you are going on vacation, or any other place where you can observe living organisms.
B. Find at least 5 living organisms that are part of a food web. For example, the ducks in a pond eat algae or weeds, a fox
might eat the ducks and so on.
C. Take pictures of at least 2 of the organisms in your food web. If you don't have a smartphone make a drawing of the
organisms
D. Make another poster showing the food web you observed yourself
E. Follow the instructions above for the format of your poster
STEP 4: At the start of the school year submit your video notes, the pictures or drawings of the two organisms you observed and your two posters to receive full credit
